Do’s and Don’ts of a Teacher’s Recommendation Letter

Some important do’s and don’ts of a teacher’s recommendation letter are as follows:

Do’s:

  • Use specific words to describe qualities of a student, and avoid using general or regular terms like, ‘punctual’ or ‘hard-working’ etc.
  • What really matters to the reader is basically how you describe the character of the student. The reader requires to know from you that what you, as a teacher, really think about the student.
  • In your recommendation letter, it is a good idea to share a piece of some of the best works of your student with the reader.
  • As a teacher, you can also share some personal stuff about the student with the reader like, if the student is depressed or if he has some major family issue etc. However, you should ask for reader’s permission at first.

Don’ts:

  • Keep in mind that the letter is about your student and not you. So, it is not recommended to share your story with the reader.
  • Remember that you are writing this letter to inform the reader about qualities and character of your student. So, make sure not to repeat the student’s resume here, as the admissions department will ultimately get that too.
  • In your recommendation letter, make sure not to address to or mention repeatedly about a specific school or institute.
  • Make sure not to write the same recommendation letter over and over again.
