31 Teacher Recommendation Letter Templates

A teacher recommendation letter is a letter in which a teacher vouches for a student’s abilities and character to a college, scholarship committee or employer. It gives the reader an informed view of the student that grades alone can’t show. Teachers write them each fall for college applications, and again for internships, summer programs and first jobs.

This page has 31 teacher recommendation letter templates, all editable and free to download. They include a basic and a brief letter, a detailed letter for competitive programs, a school-level version and a college recommendation. Each recommendation letter for a student can also show you how to write a recommendation letter when you’re short on time.

Ask the student for a short list of their activities, goals and the deadline before you start. One specific story from your class makes the letter stronger than a list of positive adjectives.

Teachers who write recommendations often need other school and career letters too. See our business reference letter templates for employer references, employee recognition letter templates for staff thanks, and job promotion letter templates for internal moves.

Importance of Teacher’s Recommendation Letter

Part of a teacher’s job is to help their students. A teacher is also a mentor and can guide students by helping them make the right choices for their academic and professional careers.

Teachers also recommend their students, for example for a job or for higher education. A recommendation letter from a teacher is a great way to help a student.

However, the letter must be written properly. An effective recommendation letter takes time and effort, but a well-written letter will be very helpful for the student.

A teacher’s recommendation letter is especially important for students from poor families or difficult circumstances. For these students, the letter serves as a form of advocacy.

What should be included in a Teacher’s Recommendation Letter?

Many colleges and institutes recognize the value of a teacher’s recommendation letter and take it seriously. So the letter should be written with due care.

In a teacher’s recommendation letter, the content is what really matters. It should be direct and straightforward and must explain:

  • Role of the student in the class.
  • Overall impression of the student on the class.
  • His mindset.
  • His academic performance.
  • The student’s behavior, personality and social associations etc.

However a teacher writes a recommendation letter, its basic purpose must always be to give important information about the student that test scores or grades can’t provide.

Do’s and Don’ts of a Teacher’s Recommendation Letter

Some important do’s and don’ts of a teacher’s recommendation letter are as follows:

Do’s:

  • Use specific words to describe the student’s qualities, and avoid general terms like ‘punctual’ or ‘hard-working’.
  • What matters most to the reader is how you describe the student’s character. The reader wants to know what you, as a teacher, really think about the student.
  • It is a good idea to share some of your student’s best work with the reader in your recommendation letter.
  • As a teacher, you can also share personal information about the student with the reader, for example if the student is depressed or has a major family issue. However, you should ask for permission first.

Don’ts:

  • Remember that the letter is about your student, not you. So don’t share your own story with the reader.
  • Remember that you are writing this letter to tell the reader about your student’s qualities and character. Don’t repeat the student’s resume, as the admissions department will receive that too.
  • In your recommendation letter, make sure not to address to or mention repeatedly about a specific school or institute.
  • Make sure not to write the same recommendation letter over and over again.

Writing a Teacher Recommendation With Evidence

Match the letter to its purpose: admission, a scholarship or an extracurricular opportunity. Explain how the teacher knows the student before describing qualities relevant to that opportunity.

  1. Confirm the recipient, deadline, submission process and any required questions.
  2. Choose two strengths supported by classroom work or activities you personally observed.
  3. Connect those examples to the opportunity and close with an honest recommendation.

Worked Example

Example: rather than calling a student “an exceptional leader,” describe how she organized a group experiment, assigned roles and helped the group document an unexpected result. Explain what that behaviour showed about collaboration or initiative without inventing a class ranking.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Do not promise outcomes or exaggerate familiarity with the student. Respect submission confidentiality and omit sensitive personal circumstances unless disclosure is appropriate and authorized.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a student give the teacher a draft?

A student can provide background and achievements if the teacher welcomes them, but the teacher should write or approve an accurate letter reflecting their own judgment.

What if I cannot recommend the student strongly?

Be honest about what you can substantiate. Where appropriate, explain your limits early enough for the student to seek a different referee rather than supplying misleading praise.
